Wanwei Updated High-Tech Material (Wanwei) reported its 1H26 results on 20 August: 1H26 revenue was RMB4.24bn (+4.3% YoY), attributable net profit was RMB310mn (+22% YoY), and recurring net profit was RMB300mn (+24% YoY). In 2Q26, attributable net profit was RMB180mn (+28% YoY, +30% QoQ) and recurring net profit was RMB180mn (+41% YoY, +44% QoQ). The company's 2Q26 net profit was broadly in line with our expectation of RMB180mn. Given the healthy competitive landscape in the PVA industry, and the volume ramp-up in new materials such as PVA optical film and auto-grade PVB interlayer film, we maintain our OVERWEIGHT rating.
Rising PVA prices shored up GPM
In 1H26, the company sold 114kt of PVA (-9% YoY), with PVA revenue of RMB1.18bn (-12% YoY) and gross margin of 24% (-1.5pp YoY). In 2Q26, PVA sales volume was 49kt (-28% YoY, -24% QoQ), with average selling price at RMB12,000/tonne (+13% YoY, +25% QoQ). In 1H26, sales volumes of PVA fiber/polyester chips/VAE emulsion/redispersible latex powder/VAC changed by -19/-7/-5/+44/+68% YoY to 8.5kt/34kt/39kt/44kt/63kt. Revenues from these products changed by -20/-3/+13/+51/+118% YoY to RMB130/270/190/390/420mn, with gross margins changing by -1/-0/16/+6/+19pp YoY to 12/7/31/27/24%. The ramp-up of new capacity for latex powder and emulsion, along with cost-supported average price recovery, helped improve segment gross margins. For new materials, 1H26 PVA optical film sales volume declined by 24% YoY to 3.29mn sqm, due to increased internal use for polarizer production, with revenue down 40% YoY to RMB29mn, gross margin down 20pp to 29%, and average selling price down 22% YoY to RMB8.8/sqm. In 1H26, PVB interlayer film sales volume increased by 23% YoY to 4.4kt, driven by higher auto-grade product volumes, with revenue up 12% YoY to RMB82mn and average selling price down 9% YoY to RMB18,700/tonne. Higher PVA prices for the company's core products supported YoY earnings improvement, with 1H26 blended gross margin up 3pp YoY to 18% and the period expense ratio up 1pp YoY to 9.3%. In 2Q26, gross margin was 20% (+6pp YoY, +4pp QoQ) and the period expense ratio was 10.5% (+3pp YoY, +2pp QoQ).
Earnings forecasts and valuation
Considering the retreat in PVA prices since July, we lower our earnings forecasts. We now expect attributable net profit of RMB620/750/870mn in 2026/2027/2028 (previous: RMB690/812/949mn, lowered by 9/8/8%), implying EPS of RMB0.30/ 0.36/0.42. In line with the average 2026E PE of 23x for comparable companies on Wind consensus, we apply 23x 2026E PE to derive our target price of RMB6.90 (previous: RMB8.25, based on 25x 2026E PE vs. comparable companies' 25x PE). Maintain OVERWEIGHT
Risks: intensifying industry competition keep prices weak, new products ramping up fall short of our expectations.
